Eric Scot English

Writer, Columnist and Podcaster

Eric Scot English is the author of UNenlightenment, a theological and philosophical guide for people who are deconstructing their faith and want to build a belief system that is fully their own.

He writes a column for Patheos Progressive Christian, also called UNenlightenment, and hosts a podcast of the same name, where he interviews leading thinkers in the Christian faith about progressive Christianity and evangelicalism. He has also been a guest on a number of podcasts and radio shows — you can hear those conversations on the media page.

Education

Eric holds a bachelor’s degree in Bible from Cornerstone University and an MA in Philosophy/Theology from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School. That training in both the evangelical tradition and in philosophy shapes the book: it takes the questions people ask during deconstruction seriously, and answers them from inside the history and theology of the Church rather than from outside it.

Church and Ministry

Eric has also served in various capacities in his church and in the denomination he belongs to. His work focuses on discipleship, and on how churches can reignite an intellectual passion for the faith, one that shows itself in the way people live.

That conviction runs through UNenlightenment. The book does not stop at rethinking old beliefs; it ends with putting what you have learned into practice and living the Gospel anew in the world.

The philosopher has not done philosophy until he has acted upon the mere conviction of his idea; for proof of the theory is in the act, not the idea.
